  1. Commitment to Achieving Net Zero

Heritagecareplace is committed to achieving Net Zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050, in line with the UK Government’s legal commitment under the Climate Change Act 2008. We recognise the urgent need to address climate change and its impact on the health and well-being of our service users, staff, and the wider community. This Carbon Reduction Plan outlines our strategy and actions to systematically reduce our carbon footprint.

  1. Baseline Emissions Footprint

Baseline emissions are a record of the greenhouse gases that have been produced in the past and were produced before the introduction of any strategies to reduce emissions. Baseline emissions are the reference point against which emissions reduction can be measured.

Baseline Year: 1 October 2023 – 30 September 2024

  1. Emissions Reduction Targets

To continue our progress toward achieving Net Zero, we have adopted the following carbon reduction targets:

We project that total carbon emissions will decrease over the next five years as follows:

We are committed to achieving Net Zero by 2050 at the latest, through a combination of further significant reductions and credible offsetting for any residual emissions.

  1. Carbon Reduction Initiatives

Heritagecareplace has already taken steps and plans to implement further measures to reduce its carbon footprint.

4.1. Completed Carbon Reduction Initiatives:

  • Digitalisation of Records: Significant reduction in paper usage through the adoption of digital care plans and administrative processes.
  • LED Lighting Upgrade: Phased replacement of traditional lighting with energy-efficient LED bulbs across facilities.
  • Recycling Programme: Implementation of comprehensive recycling bins for paper, plastic, and cardboard in offices and common areas.
  • Virtual Meetings: Increased use of video conferencing to reduce the need for business travel, where possible.

4.2. Current and Future Carbon Reduction Initiatives:

  • Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy:
  • Action: Conduct an energy audit of all premises to identify further efficiency opportunities (e.g., insulation, smart heating controls).
  • Action: Actively explore switching to a 100% renewable electricity supplier for all premises by [Target Date, e.g., 2027].
  • Action: Investigate the feasibility of installing solar panels on suitable care facilities.
  • Sustainable Travel:
  • Action: Promote sustainable commuting options for staff (e.g., cycle-to-work scheme, public transport incentives).
  • Action: Review company vehicle fleet (if applicable) to transition to electric or hybrid vehicles for home care visits and essential business travel by [Target Date, e.g., 2030].
  • Action: Optimise care visit routes to minimise mileage and fuel consumption.
  • Waste Management:
  • Action: Implement stricter waste segregation for clinical and non-clinical waste to maximise recycling and reduce landfill waste.
  • Action: Introduce initiatives to reduce food waste in care settings (e.g., portion control, composting where feasible).
  • Action: Minimise the use of single-use plastics in catering and care delivery where safe and appropriate alternatives exist.
  • Sustainable Procurement:
  • Action: Develop a sustainable procurement policy that prioritises suppliers with strong environmental credentials and locally sourced goods where possible.
  • Action: Review the environmental impact of key supplies (e.g., cleaning products, personal protective equipment) and seek more sustainable alternatives.
  • Staff and Service User Engagement:
  • Action: Provide regular training and awareness sessions for all staff on environmental sustainability best practices (e.g., energy saving, responsible waste disposal).
  • Action: Engage service users and their families in sustainability initiatives, promoting awareness and participation (e.g., encouraging recycling in their rooms).
  1. Monitoring and Reporting Progress

Heritagecareplace will continuously monitor its carbon emissions and progress against the targets outlined in this plan.

  • Annual Reporting: Our carbon footprint will be measured and reported annually, with figures updated against the baseline.
  • Public Disclosure: This Carbon Reduction Plan will be reviewed and updated at least annually and published on the Heritagecareplace website to ensure transparency and accountability.
  • Internal Review: Regular internal reviews will be conducted by the leadership team to assess progress, identify new opportunities for reduction, and address any challenges.
  1. Declaration and Sign Off

This Carbon Reduction Plan has been completed by PPN 06/21 and associated guidance and reporting standards for Carbon Reduction Plans.

Emissions have been reported and recorded by the published reporting standard for Carbon Reduction Plans and the GHG Reporting Protocol Corporate Standard, and use the appropriate Government emission conversion factors for greenhouse gas company reporting.

Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions have been reported by SECR requirements, and the required subset of Scope 3 emissions has been reported by the published reporting standard for Carbon Reduction Plans and the Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3) Standard.

This Carbon Reduction Plan has been reviewed and signed off by the board of directors (or equivalent management body).
